Top Ten Tuesday | Books I’ve Decided I’m No Longer Interested In Reading

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018!

This week’s prompt was a little difficult for me to think up, so I only was able to come up with eight! Very rarely will I lose interest in a series, even when I know I probably should tap out. But I tried my hardest to come up with a few things I don’t plan on touching anytime soon, yet many are just author’s works in general! 💘

All Souls Trilogy Series by Deborah Harkness

I read book one, A Discovery of Witches, last October, and I really wanted to love it. A lot of people are very excited about the upcoming show, and this honestly is a very beloved book by many. Yet, I thought it was slow, and long-winded, and I just really disliked it. I have no plans of continuing on.

Night Huntress World by Jeaniene Frost

I used to love this PNR series so very much growing up. Yet, now it feels like every book is just setting up for the next. The last few have felt so rushed and disjointed, and it really has turned me off from this world. Which is super sad, because I used to love this world so much.

The Kingmaker Chronicles by Amanda Bouchet

I one starred the first book, because there were too many problematic consent aspects for me to ever enjoy this story, but a few friends have promised me it gets better. Yet, all the negative comments I’ve gotten from this fanbase? I could never bring myself to buy and/or read anything else in this series.

Anything by James Patterson

I used to live for James Patterson releases when I was a young girl, growing up. He is still, to this day, my most read author, but I just can’t do it anymore. Everything he “creates” is cowritten, and to say that the quality has dipped is an understatement. I can’t even remember the last time I’ve enjoyed a book of his, and I have no urge to ever pick one up again.

Winter (The Lunar Chronicles #4) by Marissa Meyer

*dodges all the tomatoes* I promise I will read it, I WILL! I am just… so not interested! I feel like 1.) I don’t love this series nearly as much as the rest of the book community! And 2.) this ship has sailed! I waited too dang long, and now… I just don’t know. But I promise, I will eventually read this! And *crosses fingers* I still haven’t been spoiled on the wedding, somehow, so hopefully it stays that way whenever I do eventually decided to pick this up!

Anything by PC Cast and Kristin Cast

Seriously, I don’t know how I tortured myself into reading the entire House of Night series, but never again. Never again. You couldn’t pay me enough to read a book by either of them.

The Falconer Series by Elizabeth May

Okay, this was supposed to be this amazing dark fae story, but it read like such a rip-off of KMM’s Fever series. I honestly couldn’t believe it. I have no plans to ever finish this series, even though I know it is very beloved by many.

Anything by Richelle Mead

Trust me, this one hurts me to write. I used to be the biggest fan on Vampire Academy, and The Dark Swan series is still one of my favorites of all time, but I just feel like the quality of her works keeps going downhill. Bloodlines, Soundless, The Glittering Court, I’ve disliked it all, and I’m sick of shooting myself in the foot, honestly.

Okay, I know so many of these are more “authors” instead of “books”, but I tried my best! Also, this entire post was written by me under copious amounts of Dayquil, so I apologize regardless. I hope you’re having a wonderful week, and I wish you all the happiest of reading! 💝

  1. I had to push myself through the last book in the All Souls trilogy so I don’t blame you for disgarding it. It really is so slow.
As for Into the Fire… I agree with you. I loved Vlad in the original series, but he really changed in his solo series 😦 I disliked his series, which is a total bummer. I’m excited for Ian’s series, but so worried that his character will also change :/

    1. I love this comment so much, Sionna, because you are one of my only friends to even give Vlad’s series a try. Gosh, I loved the first ones so much… I’m still heartbroken. But please let me know if Ian’s is worth it, and I’ll totally pick it up if you say so! Happy reading, love! 💗

    1. Oh my gosh! You are one of the few people that make me feel… not alone… with this series! I am not sure what it was, but that series never impressed me the way it did everyone else! And thank you so much, Lena! Happy reading! 💗

    1. Yeah, I’m not sure how well it would hold up. But I feel like that with some of my most beloved series, like Vampire Academy, too. Nostalgia is a tricky thing! Hahaha. I hope you’re having happy reading, Poulami love! 💗

  2. I legit had to LOL when I reached House of Night series, this is one I included in a tag for authors I will never read from again. I think I read about 8 of the books before I asked myself if I really wanted to continue with the bad writing & TERRIBLE grammatical errors (every other sentence). I think I’ll save Discovery of Witches to digest as a tv series cause the bag of reviews is mixed on this one. I completely understand your feelings on The Lunar Chronicles though…it’s been a while since that’s been out lol…& at the time I LOVED it! now, it’s just a couple of the characters I really enjoy reading about (Iko & Thorne lol) soooo I’m glad that it ended! 😉 Enjoyed the post as always Mel! ❤ ❤ ❤

    1. Oh my gosh, you are honestly my book twin. I would constantly make jokes, “it’s not Halloween without a shitty house of night book I feel forced to read” AND ID BUY IT AND READ IT. I was sick. Hahahah. But yeah, Iko is so my favorite in Lunar Chronicles. I totally don’t dislike the books, I just never loved them. But honestly? I’ve read everything but Winter. I need to EVENTUALLY do it. But then I see 800 pages and I’m like, “byyye!” Hahaha. ❤️😘

      1. Lmfaoooo!!! Ugh 🤦🏻‍♀️ regret a million times over bothering with that series 😂 Winter was cool, but just be warned everything wraps up nicely which is why it’s so massive. Marissa gave each character enough page time. I liked it because it felt like the final chapter lol but I know some didn’t want it to be so clean cut 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

  3. I only made it through the first one or two House of night books, and that was over 10 years ago. It never even occurred to me to keep reading.

I didn’t finish the all souls trilogy series either, DNF the second book because the library loan ended and I just didn’t care.

It’s hard to separate authors from their bad stories, especially if they keep writing worse and worse stories. Someone out there must like it, though!

    1. Right? If they’ve published this many… there must be a market! Hahaha. I am super excited for the Discovery of Witches show. The atmosphere was honesty perfect in that book, so I can’t wait to see it on scene… just hopefully with a bit quicker plot.

But I hope you’re having the happiest of reading, Maria love! 💗💗

      1. They did a good job with the outlander show… although I’ve only watched season 1. I’m too much of a prude to watch season 2… what if my kids walk in?! O.o;; Hopefully the witch show will be well done… I do like witches!

  4. I haven’t read any of those! Probably a good thing 😀

I DO remember that there was so much hype surrounding the ‘House of Night’ series in Germany a couple of years ago. One of my friends got really into it and met up with other fans almost every weekend! They rented castles/buildings and not sure exactly what they were doing there, as I haven’t read the books, but I suppose they did some Cosplay, Role-Playing etc.?

  5. Tbh, I’m reading A Discovery of Witches rn. It’s entertaining but yeah, I agree it’s kind of slow. This ONE book reminded me of the whole Twilight series. I’m cringing but it’s kind of funny that I’m reading this one. I’m also eagerly waiting for the show. 😆 As for the House of Night series, I only managed reading the first book. I think it’s the protagonist I didn’t like, that’s why I dropped the books from my tbr.

    1. Girl, I admire you. I’m not sure why teenager Melanie was so obsessed with reading EVERY House of Night book, but I don’t know her anymore… haha! And yeah, I hope the show for A Discovery of Witches is amazing! I can’t wait, honestly! Happy reading, love! 💘xx

    1. Hahaha! This! They take up SUCH a chunk in one of my bookshelves and I always think about what books could be there instead. But I invited SO many Halloweens on them… I just can’t part with them! Haha! 💘xx

    1. I’m still like, “what happened!?” while also being like, “MELANIE, DONT YOU DARE GIVE HER ANOTHER CHANCE!” I legit… don’t understand what happened, my love! 💘xx

  6. IF IT HELPS SOME OF THESE COVERS ARE REALLY CRINGY?? also WINTER OMG i’m lowkey shook that you haven’t been spoiled yet but AGHHH *whispers* you really really should read it

Winter was my second-to-last least fave in the series though?? So I get your hesitation?

    1. Oh my gosh, I just did your twitter poll thing and said “I wish we were better friends” and come see like two comments from you? BLESSED. Hahaha.

I legit do need to read winter. I’m half way through Renegades right now, so maybe after I will be more motivated? Plus I want to start the graphic novels eventually! Ahhh, hopefully soon!

And yeah… Richelle Mead just… I don’t even understand how she went so downhill? Vampire Academy was my LIFE at one point. Hahaha.

      But happy reading, Julianna! 💗xx

Ahhhhhhhhh okay Winter is definitely not as good as Cress but I still love it?? It focuses on Winter and Jacin which is,.. my least favorite ship oops… but STILL READ IT AND FINISH THE FINALE THING.

I love VA so much even though it’s lowkey a trashy read….. but if you reread we should do a BUDDY READ AM I RIGHT
