Top Ten Tuesday | My Favorite Video Games of All Time

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018!

So, the Top Ten Tuesday this week is a freebie that you could do anything you want with! Obviously, I made this blog because of my passion for literature and reading, but the other half of my heart will always belong to video games. And if you’ve ever wondered why my blog name is Mel to the Any, it is completely, 100%, without question, because it’s been my online ID for so long because of video games! But I figured it would be cool to tell you guys my top ten favorite video games, all of which have really shaped the person I am today! And I ranked them from my least favorite favorite to my most favorite favorite! I hope you guys enjoy!

And let’s be real, I’ve been playing video games my whole life, I had to add five honorable mentions as well, just super quick:

➽ Pokémon – Pokémon Yellow to be specific, because Pikachu would follow you around.
➽ Dark Souls – Because it’s my brother’s favorite game, and few things in life bring me more joy than theorycrafting with him and ruining his playthroughs trying to be as good as him.
➽ Age of Empires II – The number of hours I have clocked in from playing this classic game with my friends is a little ridiculous, but each night has brought me so much joy.
➽ Hearthstone – I feel like I had to include this, just because I play at least one game of Hearthstone every night before I go to bed. (Also, I’m a Blizzard fangirl in general!)
➽ The Sims Franchise – I’ve played this entire franchise on and off for so damn long, that I couldn’t compile a list without mentioning these games!

➽ 10.) RuneScape

Lord, help me. I didn’t want to put this on my list for you to all see my shame. But it had to come into the tenth place spot, because this is the game that got me obsessed with MMOS! If it wasn’t for this game, I would have never picked up WoW when it came out. And me and my brother were legit so damn obsessed with RuneScape when we were little. It’s funny too, because from time to time we will reinstall it, and try to play the “new” version, and we always have a good laugh.

➽ 9.) The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

I have only played W3, but I loved it more than I have words to express! I’m so forever thankful for my friend Jake and for him buying me not only this game, but both DLC when they became available too! These games are actually based on a Polish book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, which has gotten pretty popular as of lately! I’ve only reviewed the first set of short stories, but they are glorious perfection. Also, team Yennefer forever, okay, thanks, bye!

➽ 8.) Child of Light

I’m weeping just thinking about how perfect this game is. The one liners in this? Perfection. And every time I start this game, I enter into a water colored heaven that I never want to leave. And seeing this main character grow? With her adorable companion? Lord, who keeps cutting these damn onions? Seriously, please pick this one up.

➽ 7.) Civ Franchise

The highlight of my week, every week, is spending Thursday night with my dear friend, Cory, playing Civ, and watching Critical Role. Right now, we are playing Civilization VI, but we have clocked in a lot of time with the older games too. And my heart is always so full playing with someone I care so much about, each and every week! (Until multiplayer SDV comes out… eventually, muahahaha!)

➽ 6.) Banished

Okay, I’m here to tell you right now that this is the game everyone sleeps on! I have played, and loved, many city builders in my life, but all of them fail in comparison to Banished. It is hard, but it is rewarding, and I love it more than words. Also, this entire thing was created by one dude, and it’s truly a work of art. I will play this game forever and ever.

➽ 5.) Spyro the Dragon

My Playstation didn’t see any other game except for this one for… a long time. I just remember getting this for Christmas back in the day, and me and my brother playing it the entire winter break, nonstop. Like, we’d take turns to eat and stuff. We were ridiculous. From collecting all the gems, to kicking all the sheep, to that final boss battle. All the nostalgia, all the feels, and Spyro will always be one of my favorite protagonists of all time. Let’s hope a remake doesn’t try to ruin it.

➽ 4.) Halo Franchise

Okay, so I have a soft spot for Halo 2, always and forever, but nothing emotionally impacted me more than those first commercials coming out for the xbox and Halo. Like, I was shook. Actually, to this day, I still think the Halo commercials are 10/10. The story is one I’m so invested in still. The memories from every midnight release. The memories from every LAN. The memories of MLG. Even the memories of my hands being so sore from hamburger controllers. This will forever always be a series that I will love for the rest of my life. It means so much to me. I actually hope to one day get a Master Chief tattoo on my thigh. Also, best quote from any video game ever? “Wake me… when you need me.”

➽ 3.) Transistor

Never have I ever played a game so beautiful visually, musically, and story wise. And the amount of money I have given Super Giant Games for merch is something I never want to think about. The story in this rivals the very best books that we all read and review, and if you guys are looking for a game you’ll never forget, please pick up Transistor. Also, if you’ve ever wondered about my twitter background of that image I use all the time? It’s from Transistor. The Art makes me week. Also, Bastion should probably be on this list too, but I honestly couldn’t fit it in. And both of these games will be so cheap for the Steam Summer Sale coming up. Please, please, please, I’m begging out, give Transistor a try, or at least the soundtrack.

➽ 2.) World of Warcraft

I’ll be honest when I say that I don’t know where I would be today without World of Warcraft. It has quite literally shaped my life and what it is today, and I will forever be thankful for this game. I have played it off and on for over a decade now, and it is easily the game I’ve clocked the most hours in. I mained a warlock (meltotheany) in vanilla and through most of BC, but I switched over to shammy (xviv) in sunwell, when my guild needed it. But they were awesome and let me full gear both of them. I feel like I have played my shaman way more, but my heart always has belong to my warlock, but I’d probably going into BFA maining my shaman once again, let’s be real.

➽ 1.) League of Legends

League of Legends is the biggest game in my life right now. I am completely obsessed with LoL esports, and I don’t miss NA or LCK games. My favorite weekends are LCS weekends, and not only is it my favorite game to play, it’s my favorite sport to watch. I am a mid Morgana main, but Ahri is my second favorite. I also have a soft spot for Annie, because she was the first champion I ever played. Also, what a missed opportunity… Mel to the Annie… Ahhh, I should have been an Annie main! I love playing Lux and having my brother play Garen, because I’m ridiculous. And I love Zyra too, even though I dislike her rework, because she’s difficult to succeeded mid lane with now.

I know this isn’t book related (even though I’ve read so many books and lore behind most of these games), but I hope you liked maybe learning a little bit more about me and my passions!   1. I’m totally with your brother on Dark Souls! I’ve played all 3, and Bloodborne, and I’m obsessed with all of them – mainly due to the lore. They’re really fascinating games to ruminate over.

    Pokemon Yellow was a huge part of my childhood. ❤

    I really miss WoW. I started playing back during Wrath and into Cataclysm. but haven't touched my accounts in years. My poor characters. It was such a fun game though for the time I played it!

    1. THE LORE OF BLOODBORNE IS SO GOOD! I was so tempted to add that to my list but that, Dark Souls 1-3, and Dragon Age are so “my brother’s games” that I felt dirty! But, such good picks, Bentley love!

  2. I haven’t played a video game in about 2 years and then it was only 3 of my old favorites: Tales of Symphonia (game cube), Final Fantasy 9 (PlayStation but also available on iPhone and Kindle) and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (originally Xbox but I played it on the Kindle).
    I also used to play WOW and I go through phases where I dearly miss it, but there’s just not enough time.

    Yes to pokemon (although I think I liked blue or red because my favorite was charmander) and Spyro the dragon!! Also as a kid we loved all the Crash Bandicoot and my husband and I will still play it every once in a while. (After the kids are in bed, of course.)

  4. Oh Civilization – I know you well. I started playing this franchise from the start all the way back in roughly 1992 (on a black and white ‘Macintosh personal computer’ no less)! Civ IV is the only that I have ever given up an entire night of sleep for. The plan was to play until about midnight; my time checks came at 11:30, 1:30, and 3:45 before I just decided I would play until I had to go to work. I blame the Viking invasion.

So cool you’re a gamer too Mel, I didn’t know that! 🙂 ❤ I love Civilization, been playing it since 2nd or 3rd, can't remember, but 4th was my absolute favorite because of the intro song (remember Baba Yetu?), me and my lil brother and sister would sing it through every damn time, getting half of the lines wrong ofc cause it's in Swahili haha, and the leaders were beautifully drawn, and the animated sequences when the wonders are done building. I'm obsessed with the 6th edition ever since it came out, and I LOVE Sean Bean's narration! ❤ Of course, Sims 1-4 have taken days of my life 🙂 And the Age of Empires was marvellous back then, and I especially loved the spin-off Age of Mythology because I'm a mythology nerd. My top favorite games are different than yours (Elder Scrolls, Diablo, Silent Hill etc.), but it's so nice to find a fellow gamer that is also a girl. 🙂

Ahh that were good times, glad I made you giggle. 😀 I remember my mom having a weird expression on her face when she stumbled on her three Serbian kids singing in Swahili. 😀 Haha I’ll add you everywhere, but I’ve only played casual games in the last year or so cause my laptop is dying. I’m about to buy a pro PC soon I hope, so I’ll catch up on everything, and I want to try Divinity and The Witcher sooo bad.   6. I grew up with a younger brother who loves video games and it is how we bonded. I found Runescape and we became addicted to it. Even had premium accounts! We will still play from time to time. I adore Spyro! We also beat all of the Halo games. I relate to this post so much!

      No but really I love video games so much and can’t believe I didn’t even consider doing my top 10 games for this week (although it’s not too late as I haven’t done mine yet). So here are my reactions:
      1) POKEMON YELLOW YES – yellow and crystal were always my absolute faves :’)
      2) RUNESCAPE OMFG YES. I used to LOVE playing Runescape and still think about it every now and then. It was so good and I just gush about it lol
      3) Civ YESSSSSSSSSS. I play Civ 5 and it’s just TOO GOOD. So many hours have been spent on that game.
      4) Spyro has such a special place in my heart. It’s one of the first playstation games I played when I first got my own console and I love it to pieces. Have you seen they’re releasing a newly vamped version of the first three games soon?????

  14. Mel! I can’t believe I didn’t know you were a gamer! Admittedly I stopped playing a while ago, but Halo (and Morrowind, for completely different reasons) will always stay in my heart ❤️ The first xbox were everything to me. I only switched to PS with the 4th and I still feel a bit guilty lmao 🙈

    I also really liked Child of Light! My precious omg 😍

  16. I love this post so much! I completely blanked on this freebie but I like the direction you went with it. I think it’s great learning about your other passion besides books. I’m super super familiar with a lot of these games. Most I’ve heard of but a lot of them I haven’t played. I did use to play a little bit of league. I wasn’t very good at it but I would play Ashe. I do really want to check out The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. I’ve been wanting for that to have a sale. I’ve been really into Far Cry 5 lately. Also really enjoy the picture of little Melanie. Too cute!!

  17. Oh god, that picture is the best!!! This just makes me so nostalgic & reminds me of my (happy, happy!) childhood. I think we are around the same age. I loved Mario 3 and still play it nowadays (I love my Super Nintendo, only maybe my 3DS can live up to it haha).

    My brother’s favourite game is ‘League of Legends’ 🙂 After he gave up on WOW. He has good taste 😉

    And my brother-in-law got me into the ‘Witcher’-franchise. I haven’t played the games but read the first 2 books. He said the games are amazing and he picked up the books after.

    I used to play the Sims games as well. Always on and off, like you. I had a couple of weeks where I played it for hours every day. And then I stopped for a couple of month.. Eventually I always picked it up again. I always stayed up to date with versions, but I didn’t get Sims 4. I stopped at 3 and haven’t played it in 3 years. Maybe my interest it gone, maybe I’ll pick it up again at some point.

    Why are there so many games??? 😀 I can’t keep up! I am still in the middle of ‘Ocarina of Time’ on my 3DS.

    I’m also a big sims fan! Haven’t played since 2016, but i still consider myself fan. 3 is my forever fave.

    Transistor was a cool game! I loved the art style a lot.

    Love mmos but never gotten into WoW somehow… i played a lot of Guild Wars 2, Wildstar, Star Wars, and The Secret World 😍

  22. Runescape!!! Lol back in the day I had a max level character and joined a “clan” called the Golden Pickaxe. We would mine and take risky trips into the Wild The dramatic gaming experience of a 13-year-old lol! I’ve seen the new RS, too, and not gunna lie, I totally tried to get my brother to play it with me for the nostalgia.😅 It started by obsessions with MMO’s, too!

    I don’t play Pokémon anymore, but my brother and I used to be so into blue and red that my parents ended up getting each of us a game boy. I still crochet a lot of Pokémon, though lol.

  23. Perfect post, Mel! I LOVE Banished and The Sims, although after a while it just got to a point where I don’t know what to do there anymore? It’s just stagnated.
    I found Spyro the cutest thing when my boyfriend first introduced me to it (it’s one of his childhood games) and Child of Light is absolutely stunning.
    Unfortunately I don’t play that much anymore, even though I have a massive Steam library, but it’s lovely to read about it 🙂

I ONLY KNOW ONE OTHER PERSON WHO PLAYS BANISHED T_T I’m so glad to have found someone else ❤ ❤ It's just such a nice game, it's a shame they don't get more content in… I think anyone can actually create mods for it but I'd like a proper update by the creator. Though I'm not sure it's doable. Ugh!

  24. Amazing post, Melanie! You look so cute on that pic! It reminds me of myself when I used to play games in my childhood! I love Super Mario! It’s one of my favorite games. I’m not a morning person but I used to wake up early just to play video games before going to school. It’s been a long time since I picked up a game controller. I used to play Single player RPG’s like metal gear solid, DMC, and COD but I never tried multiplayer games. These all sounds amazing especially League Of Legends.

  26. This is a phenomenal list and I love that you also have a passion for gaming!!! Spyro was an amazing discovery as a kid on my Playstation as well! And WoW was a HUGE chunk of my high school life too. I stopped right before the Panda invasion came along. I think I got through all of the best part of that universe anyways. 😀 I also recently (end 2017) went through League until I got high enough to play ranked and then stopped after having seen most of what the game could offer hahahah

  27. You play Halo too?! That is awesome! I got hooked on Halo when I met Brandon. We completed a legendary campaign on Halo 4 in like 19 hours. It was a true testament to how well we get along. lol. I wore my Master Chief skin with pride in PVP! He also plays WoW. I’ve tried but it’s quite confusing to me.
    Have you tried Overwatch? That is the game I’m so obsessed with right now. I’m a tank/healer. I want to get it for computer even though it is a lot of fun on PS4. Crash Bandicoot and GTA: San Andreas also hold very special places in my heart. lol.

I am a Dva main, but I love me some Junkrat too! So my friends are always like “OKAY, MELANIE, WHICH ONE!” so they know if they have to play a tank, hahahaha! And yeah, I honestly only PC game these days. But Halo will forever be the reason I buy xboxes, hahaha! 💗xx

I recently learned how to 5 tap an enemy after only playing him for almost 200 hours. I also am really digging Reaper after his latest buff.   28. I’ve been wanting to play Child of Light for forever but on the endless list of games to buy and play, it’s never quite getting to the top. Now I definitely need to rectify that!
    Absolutely loved reading about your favourite games! I’ve been playing WoW on and off for the last 6 years and it has also hugely impacted my life. I haven’t played it in a really long time now because I am so shit at finding a balance between it and my other hobbies (and, let’s be real, any other obligations) but I’m forever grateful and I crave to play again sometime soon!

    1. Child of Light is so good, but I played it on PC, so i had to go through Ubisoft and Ubisoft is always the most annoying nightmare! Haha! So I totally recommend playing it on xbox or ps!

      And just when i think i can possibly have less of a crush on you, you go tell me about wow…. GIRL! Hahaha! 💗xx

      1. HA if only you’d see me play. I am #1 NOOB, always ready to annoy everyone and ruin everything 😀 my main is a Hunter and I still LOVE it but oh man, you don’t wanna know how many times my pet aggroed enemies :p

    Also, Spyro is such a nostalgic game for me, I used to play it all the time when I was younger (and now I really want to play it again)
