Down the TBR Hole #4

Down the TBR Hole was originally created by Lost in a Story! The point of it is to help cull your reading lists down, or maybe push higher anticipated releases up on your TBR! And maybe you all can help me along the way, and tell me if you’ve loved or hated any of these!

How it works:
➽ Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
➽ Order on ascending date added.
➽ Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
➽ Read the synopses of the books
➽ Decide: keep it or should it go?

Friends, this is another super wacky combination, mixed with a little wishful thinking on my part. But please help me decide what to do, since maybe I’m just being a little negative this week with these books.

The Six Books:

Carry On (Simon Snow #1) by Rainbow Rowell
Gosh, I’m going to lose so many followers off this I bet, but I just can’t connect with Rainbow Rowell’s writing. I mean, I totally agree that I saw myself freshman year of college in Fangirl, but I still couldn’t fall in love with it. And now this book has so much hype because of the sequel announcement. Dang, you all, I just don’t think this is going to be for me. But please let me know if you honestly think I would enjoy this.
Verdict: Delete ❌

Stray (Shifters #1) by Rachel Vincent
The 2000’s PNR strikes again. You all, I really want your opinions on this one, because a lot of my friends love this freakin’ series. I actually feel quite reluctant to take it off my TBR.
Verdict: Delete ❌

エルフェンリート 1 (Elfen Lied #1) by Lynn Okamoto / 岡本倫
This is one of my little brother/best friend/weeb master’s favorite mangas and he always wants me to read it. I really do need to, because he never leads me astray and I love him so very much. And I hope he sees this and smiles, because I called him weeb master.
Verdict: Keep ✅

Stars Above (The Lunar Chronicles #4.5) by Marissa Meyer
Oh my gosh, last week’s was Winter and now we have this. Okay, so this is staying on my TBR because I’ve already read like half of it, when the short stories were free, before this was a published bind up. But again, am I ever going to get to this? Who the hell knows!
Verdict: Keep ✅

Doors of Stone (The Kingkiller Chronicle #3) by Patrick Rothfuss
You all, I’m sick, and I’m never giving up hope each and every single year that this book is coming out. And the hope that it will be so worth the wait!
Verdict: Keep FOREVER! ✅✅✅

Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay
I desperately need to read this, and I fully expect to love this. Have you read this? Did you love this? Inquiring minds would like to know. (It me!)
Verdict: Keep ✅

Okay, friends, these are the next oldest six books I have on my TBR! Let me know if you love, hate, and/or recommend me to read or trash any of these books! Thank you all so much, and I hope whatever you’re currently reading is five star worthy! 💛✨

  1. I feel the same way about Rainbow Rowell. I want to like her so much more than I actually like her. There is nothing at all wrong with her work, and I enjoy them in the moment, but they just don’t stick for me. And it makes me sad.

Also, I’m with you ’til the bitter end regarding Doors of Stone. I might die of old age before it comes out, but it there’s one book I desire with my entire heart, it’s that one!

    1. This is honestly the validation I needed in my life! I feel the exact same! Thank you so dang much for this comment! And like.. *shakes fist forever* I can’t believe I actually put Doors of Stone on here, because…. that wishful thinking isn’t doing anyone any good! Hahaha! Happy reading, love! 💕xx

    1. You’ll have to let me know your final thoughts if you finish! I honestly feel like I, too, had started it once a long time ago? Regardless, too many good books, too little time! Happy reading, love! 💕xx

  2. Ohhh man, you know me, I loved Carry On! It’s nothing like the tid bits that were in Fangirl. It’s just so silly and funny and the m/m romance is one of my absolute faves. It’s the “real” magical story; not fanfic, if that makes sense? 😆 I know Rainbow’s writing isn’t everyone’s fave but I feel like Carry On is a different league. Anyways if you ever decide to try it let me know! 💗💗

    1. See, this makes me want to pick it up, honestly! I think it’s one of those books (like Warcross) that so many people that I love love it! And I’m not sure I’ll like it… so it just stays on the TBR forever! Hahah! But we will see! I might give this one a try soon! Thank you so much, love! 💕xx

  3. YES, I completely understand about Rainbow Rowells writing. Everyone loves her writing. I find it to just be average. I had zero idea as to why people enjoyed Eleanor and Park. Personally, I liked her adult books over her young adult books.

  4. I watched Elfen Lied growing up…man that show was great but MESSED UP! This was when I didn’t know manga’s existed. I may have to read this one, though I’m currently in the middle of two or three manga’s…THEY TAKE FOREVER TO FINISH!!!

I also can’t connect with Rainbow Rowell yet…I’m going to try Carry On, but I’m definitely borrowing it from the library. I REALLY want to like it, so fingers crossed. And you’re too adorable and amazing to lose followers ❤

My really close friend bought me the first and second book of the Kingkiller Chronicle last year and I've YET to read it…he's mad ha-ha! I want to wait for the third book to come out…I don't like reading series until they're fully out ha-ha!

    Great post love!

    1. Oh my gosh… this comment brings me so much joy! You’re probably going to be the only person that even comments on Elfen Lied and… my heart… so happy! And yeah, I just… I don’t know why I can’t love Rainbow’s writing like most everyone else! And… Oh my gosh, your friend did so good, seriously, favorite books of all time, but the wait is so bad. SO BAD! Haha!

Thank you so much for this comment, seriously! And I hope you’re having the happiest of reading, beautiful! 💕xx

      1. Ha-ha! Yea…not many people know about it. My friends got me into anime when I was in Grade 9…I was actually into it beforehand, but I didn’t know it was anime #northamericanignoranceoverhere. Right now I’m reading Akatsuki no Yona and it’s SO GOOD! I adore it! But it’s not finished so I’m struggling as I desperately wait for the next volume…ugh.

And see???!!! I’m totally waiting to read it! I get such bad tension and anxiety when I have to wait for the sequel, especially if there’s a HUGE cliffhanger.

Of course, lovely! Anytime 😉 ❤ xoxo

  5. Bad Feminist is one of the only Roxane Gay books I haven’t read, but I’d totally recommend Hunger! and I honestly only rated Carry On a three, and I think you might like it, but honestly… it’s not required reading.

AND GREAT POST AS ALWAYS. ❤

  6. I didn’t enjoy Fangirl much, didn’t really connect to the characters or the romance… but I really enjoyed Carry On.. it was silly and funny, hilarious and cute… it’s that whole silliness and entertaining factor of the book that made me enjoy it 😊😊😊

  7. YASSSS TWIN! I’m also on the fence over Carry On, I’ve owned a copy for 2 years now and still haven’t found the desire to read it but the hype for teh sequel was getting me a teeny bit motivated HAHA! I also have Stray on my TBR & think I would give it a shot whenever the mood for Urban Fantasy hits since I’ve heard some pretty good things about this series *fingers crossed* I started Stars Above & lost interest rather quickly, I still don’t know who gets married & I’m almost sad to say I don’t think I’m all that interested so if you do finish please VN me and tell me all the spoilery things hehe 🙂

    1. This is that good, book twin, feedback that I needed! *yeets Carry On* LMAOOOOO! And, girl… same. I am torn between spoiling myself for who gets married and then just forcing my damn self to finish winter! The struggle, I’m telling you! But I love you and I can’t wait to voice note you when I’m out of here! 💖xx

      1. Wait you haven’t finished Winter? oh dear, I know it’s a bit too long, I feel like Renegades suffered from length as well. It’s like she really tries to please her reader fans by giving us as much time as possible with these characters but unnecessarily so. I pushed myself to finish Winter because I was meeting her at a signing in B&N. Love you & I still haven’t touched RULE since my commute home cause blog but promise I will LOL!

  8. Carry On is very light and fluffy and such fanfic-esque mood but not even the best fanfic if that makes sense. I read it with my friend which really elevated the experience for me (honestly we sometimes send each other books with notes in the margins because we live 3000 miles apart and Carry On was one of our message books). But yeah Rowell is very hit or miss for me. Usually I like her book overall with a glaring issue here or there that I can either look past… or not.

And darn I need to read some Roxane Gay! I’ve read her issue of Black Panther: World of Wakanda and that was great!!

    Happy reading ❤

    1. Shai, this comment honestly made me feel SO much better! I honestly think I’m going to keep Carry On next time I’m in the mood for something light and fluffy. And yes to needed to read Roxane Gay! I love that woman, and I can’t believe I haven’t yet!

Happy August and happy reading, beautiful! And thank you for this comment! 💗xx
