Down the TBR Hole #8

Down the TBR Hole was originally created by Lost in a Story! The point of it is to help cull your reading lists down, or maybe push higher anticipated releases up on your TBR! And maybe you all can help me along the way, and tell me if you’ve loved or hated any of these!

How it works:
➽ Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
➽ Order on ascending date added.
➽ Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
➽ Read the synopses of the books
➽ Decide: keep it or should it go?

Friends, this is a damn HYPED week for Down the TBR Hole! Please, oh please, do not hold back! Give me all your thoughts and feelings. And… please don’t kill me for not reading Percy Jackson yet. Okay, thanks, I love you.

The Six Books:

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
I want to read this just because it is so polarizing. I have only read two things by Gaiman, and I’ve enjoyed both! But this story just seems like people either love it or hate it! Hopefully I fall on the love it side! *Fingers crossed*
Verdict: Keep ✅

The Starlit Wood edited by Dominik Parisien & Navah Wolfe
Seanan McGuire, Catherynne M. Valente, Marjorie Liu, Naomi Novik! What am I waiting for? This is going to probably be such an amazing anthology! But honestly? It doesn’t have the best reviews and ratings on Goodreads. But then again, dark fairy-tales by my favs? I’m too much of a sucker to delete this off my TBR, let’s be real.
Verdict: Keep ✅

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
I KNOW! You don’t need to say anything. I’m keeping it, okay? Okay! I know, I know! I’m the confirmed worst! And I bet a lot of you will be surprised that I haven’t read this! But, one day! I promise! One day!
Verdict: Keep ✅

Summer Days and Summer Nights edited by Stephanie Perkins
You all, it’s August 25th. Am I really going to end up reading this before summer ends? Probably not. I did read the winter version of the anthology, and enjoyed it, but for some reason I just never gravitate towards picking this collection up.
Verdict: Delete ❌

Heart’s Blood by Juliet Marillier
I mean, at this point is it really a Down the TBR Hole post without one book from Juliet Marillier?
Verdict: Keep ✅

Dreamer’s Pool (Blackthorn & Grim #1) by Juliet Marillier
How about TWO books from Juliet Marillier? Haha! Again, I feel like I say this a lot, but I want to read all of Juliet Marillier’s back-list one day! I love her world, her characters, and her writing! I can’t wait to get to these!
Verdict: Keep ✅

Ahhh! Okay! I hope you all enjoyed these six! Life is a little hectic because my birthday is in two days! Holy moly, I’m getting old, friends! But I hope you enjoyed the next oldest six books I have on my TBR! As a birthday gift, you should all tell me if you have read any of these! Let me know if you love, hate, and/or recommend me to read or trash any of these books! Thank you all so much, and I hope whatever you’re currently reading is five star worthy! 💛✨

  1. I read The Lightning Thief (as an audiobook), and it just wasn’t for me. I feel like maybe if I had read it in middle school, I might have liked it? Maybe not. I just couldn’t relate to any of the characters, but I AM glad that I did read it just because I’ve heard SO much about it. I did like that Percy had ADHD (kind of? he has all the symptoms and thinks he has it, but then it’s explained as being something else. Idk, but I love books with characters with ADHD because I can relate lol). Anyway, it’s pretty short so I still think it’s worth a read and hopefully you will like it better than me! I did like all the mythology.

Ahh, and I am about to add Summer Days and Summer Nights to my TBR now. Short stories by Leigh Bardugo and Cassandra Clare in addition to Stephanie Perkins? Yes please!

    1. This is such a wonder feedback comment! Seriously. I always feel like I’m missing out by not reading anything by RR, but I just feel like… that train has passed? I don’t know. Maybe I’ll pick up the new illustrated one that just came out? 💖xx

  2. Thanks for sharing, I actually haven’t read any of these books so far but they look great. Do you have any book reccomendations from what you’ve read recently? Also happy early birthday!

  3. I mean I really disliked The Ocean at the End of the Lane but I think Neil Gaiman might just simply not be the writer for me. WHICH PAINS ME TO SAY, knowing how much Victoria Schwab loves him haha.
Dreamer’s Pool is still on my to-read list too. I’m super intrigued by it!

    1. This is that good feedback, beautiful. And I agree about Gaiman. I’ve only read Stardust, but I’m pretty sure I only gave it three stars and that’s with the nostalgic factor from the movie! So… we will see! Hehe! And oh my gosh, now I just want to ignore my TBR and read more from my fae queen… because… I have a mighty need! 💖xx

  4. I didn’t love nor hate The Ocean at the End of the Lane, I just found it very underwhelming…but I loved the other book I read by him (Norse Mythology) so I really want to give him another try with something else! I hope you’ll like the book more than I did! Also, I hadn’t read Percy until earlier this year so you’re all good! I always suggest listening to the audiobooks because they’re just so much fun and you won’t be able to stop listening to them 😀

    1. This is that good feedback from my future wife. Seriously though, that Percy comment made me really happy. I think I’m going to try to read all RR’s stuff in 2019. I mean, if I can make an effort for Cassie Clare in 2018, I can give PJO a try in 2019!

      Also, I love you. 💖xx

  6. So glad you’re keeping The Lightning Thief! I read through the PJO series several times when I was a kid. It was super enjoyable and definitely a favorite. I’d like to think it’s just as good now😃 Hope you love it whenever you get the chance to read it ❤️

  7. Honestly, my TBR pile is completely out of control, but with autumn approaching, I feel like I need something darker, just to get in the mood. The Last Sacrifice (VA #6), A Game of Thrones and A Torch Against The Night are perfect for that, so even though I’ve ARCs I need to read, I’ll start with these ones first.
Have a great weekend, lovely! 😍😘

    1. Yessss – all I want in the fall in dark fantasy! Which… needs to kick in, because these NA romances are killing my TBR! Haha! Thank you, babe! I hope you’re having an amazing weekend, filled with good books! 💖xx

    2. I did recently read The Lightning Thief, and it was a cute story involving Greek mythology.
    3. The Ocean at the End of the Lane was my first Neil Gaiman, and so far it’s my favorite. I thought it was told really well.

    1. 1.) I’ve only read the Shadowfell trilogy – but I loved it so much!
2.) I NEED TO GET ON IT!
3.) This honestly made me completely sure to keep it on here! I feel like this is the book that’s gotten the most mixed reactions on! 💖xx

  9. This is such a great idea! I love it! I might join in on this fun and do a post like this. I need all the help I can get tackling my TBR list!

    Happy reading to you!!!!

  10. I recommend the audiobooks for Rick Riordan’s books. They’re really easy to get through and the narrator is great. His books are also really good for any readathons, so that might give you a push to pick up Percy Jackson! (It’s so worth it!)
