Down the TBR Hole #12

Down the TBR Hole was originally created by Lost in a Story! The point of it is to help cull your reading lists down, or maybe push higher anticipated releases up on your TBR! And maybe you all can help me along the way, and tell me if you’ve loved or hated any of these!

How it works:
➽ Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
➽ Order on ascending date added.
➽ Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
➽ Read the synopses of the books
➽ Decide: keep it or should it go?

Friends, this is another all over the place week! But some of these I truly need to get to ASAP! Please, help me! Have you read any of these? Loved any of these? Maybe even not loved any of these? Seriously, me and my TBR are out of control.

The Six Books:

As I Descended by Robin Talley
I have read so many short stories by Robin Talley now, and each one is an atmospheric treat! I hope to read this one, maybe now that it’s fall! And I hear it is super queer, with PoC and disability rep!
Verdict: Keep ✅

Kushiel’s Dart (Phèdre’s Trilogy #1) by Jacqueline Carey
I’m honestly not sure why this is on my TBR, because looking at my friend’s reviews on this one? They seem to really dislike it. Have you all read this? Did you enjoy? Help me!
Verdict: Delete ❌

Midnight Never Come (The Onyx Court #1) by Marie Brennan
This is a historical fantasy involving fae and fae courts, and I’m here for that always and forever. This honestly needs to be bumped up on the TBR immediately.
Verdict: Keep ✅

Marriage Games (The Games Duet #1) by C.D. Reiss
I tried to read something by CD Reiss a very long time ago and really disliked it. But they are so beloved in the romance community, I feel like I should give them another try. But maybe not with this one? Unless you all loved it!
Verdict: Delete ❌

Storm Front (The Dresden Files #1) by Jim Butcher
I feel like half my friends LOVE Jim Butcher and the other half absolutely HATE Jim Butcher, so I’m really going to need all your help with this one! This is one of the books I feel most torn to keep or delete.
Verdict: Keep ✅

Fireblood (Frostblood Saga #2) by Elly Blake
Okay, so I read the first one, Frostblood, a while ago, and I didn’t love it, but I saw so much potential in it. I said I wanted to read on, so I probably should do so!
Verdict: Keep ✅

Okay, friends, these are the next oldest six books I have on my TBR! Let me know if you love, hate, and/or recommend me to read or trash any of these books! Thank you all so much, and I hope whatever you’re currently reading is five star worthy! 💛✨

  1. I’ve been recommended by like 2 people in person to read Kushiel’s Dart, which is why it is on my list. I’ll get to it… eventually.

Storm Front… I swear I’m on the edge with Jim Butcher. I’m like 7 or 8 books in and yeah the series is interesting and I’ll probably continue it, but I’m not in love with it. And for some reason I always take notice when he is describing women and their makeup… am I being super sensitive or does he just write women weirdly?? I guess, I say give the first one a try at least. It is interesting and there isn’t insta-love, so it does have that going for it 🙂

    1. I like Jim Butcher because he makes fantasy funny, or at least amusing.
Its been a while since I read him but I do remember he writes women as super duper I want to die beautiful, and some reviewers have complained of feminism? Still, I enjoyed most of these books because they are fun to read.

    2. This is the good feedback you always give me, Sionna! Thank you… so much. Seriously… this makes me feel more confident keeping both of them! And you totally aren’t being super sensitive, I always notice stuff like that when it’s male authors too! Hahah!

I hope you’re having happy reading, sweetheart! 💛xx

    1. LET’S DO IT, BABY! Let me check if I have any holes in my October TBR, but if not… we can totally do it the first week of November! Let me write a post it and check when I’m home! I AM SO EXCITED! 💛xx

  2. Oh no! I am sad to hear about ‘Kushiel’s Dart’. I’ve read it years ago but really enjoyed it. I thought the language was beautiful & it had one of the best romances haha. It can drag on a bit and IS very long. I can understand why people would get bored. But I just enjoyed the writing & the atmosphere and I absolutely LOVED one of the characters in it^^

  3. I was wishy washy about Jim Butcher, so I only made it through the first book in the series. I definitely didn’t hate him! But his writing just didn’t mesh with me.

I will say that I DNFed as I descended back in April around the 13% mark. There was some casual homophobia in that first bit that really turned me off: one remark about the GSA president not being “gay enough” as well as a cis gay guy commenting that two queer girls “seemed way too uptight to like pu**y.” It’s totally possible that it gets better or that the stuff above gets challenged later on, but I just didn’t feel like pushing through it at the time. Just to give you a heads up on what my experience was!

    1. Diana, this is the perfect feedback you always give me! This one seems to be the one that is most polarizing with feedback, but I honestly feel the same way you do (but with the american version, hahah!) 💛xx
