Down the TBR Hole was originally created by Lost in a Story! The point of it is to help cull your reading lists down, or maybe push higher anticipated releases up on your TBR! And maybe you all can help me along the way, and tell me if you’ve loved or hated any of these!

How it works:
➽ Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
➽ Order on ascending date added.
➽ Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
➽ Read the synopses of the books
➽ Decide: keep it or should it go?

I feel like we are finally getting into “newer” books, even though I still added these at the start of 2017. But yeah, it only took us fourteen posts to get to some relevancy across the board!

The Six Books:

➽ Wintersong (Wintersong #1) by S. Jae-Jones
Okay, here is the thing, I am so incredibly drawn to this book it is actually ridiculous! Yet, so many people who I love and trust absolutely hate this book! So, I think that’s what has kept me from picking it up! But I own it, I’m drawn to it, and I need to just go with my gut and read it!
Verdict: Keep ✅

➽ One Blood Ruby (Seven Black Diamonds #2) by Melissa Marr
I know I talk about Holly Black a lot and how she made me fall in love with all things Fae, but so did Melissa Marr! And I really enjoyed book one in this series! So, I’m not sure what the hold up is, but I need to read this!
Verdict: Keep ✅

➽ Twelve Kings in Sharakhai (The Song of the Shattered Sands #1) by Bradley P. Beaulieu
This is such a beloved series among my friends. I also got an ARC of a later book in the series, so I really need to tackle this one soon. And I have the highest of hopes that I will love this!
Verdict: Keep ✅

➽ Veiled Intentions (The Dragon’s Blade #2) by Michael R. Miller
I loved this first book when I read it too long ago! I totally want to jump back into this world and then even read on past this book! Someone, please, give me more time! *Sings Hamilton for the rest of the day*
Verdict: Keep ✅

➽ Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection by Brandon Sanderson
This is another anthology that I’ve read half or more of! I just need to sit down and read all the rest. Also, some of the stories in this collection have honestly been perfection and life changing. I know the unread ones are going to be phenomenal as well!
Verdict: Keep ✅

➽ The Seven Princes of the Thousand Year Labyrinth Vol. 3 by Aikawa Yu & Atori Haruno
Friends, this is one of my favorite mangas of all time. I can’t believe I haven’t bought this or read this. When I started this series only one and two were available for purchase in the US, and I guess I just let three and four slip my mind. But I need to rectify this immediately!
Verdict: Keep ✅

Holy shit, it also took us fourteen posts to finally get one where I kept all six books! What a damn miracle! Okay, friends, these are the next oldest six books I have on my TBR! Let me know if you love, hate, and/or recommend me to read or trash any of these books! Thank you all so much, and I hope you’re having the happiest of reading, loves! 💛🎃👻

  1. Ok, you’re asking people for the opinion, so I’m gonna give you my opinion on Wintersong. I wouldn’t do this if this was just your monthly TBR or something but you ASKED.
    Wintersong is a huge piece of trash that I hate with the fire of a million suns. And not because of the boring plot, unlikeable main character or because the author apparently couldn’t even be bothered to have the one German sentence she uses again and again to be proofread by a native speaker.
    But it is incredibly problematic. There’s huge issues with consent (which I feel like many people are hardly noticing cause the girls is the one who is initiating) and the general view of sex and especially everything about virginity sends out an absolutely awful message.

    I think you know I’m not usually one to be like “OMG NO THIS BOOK IS TRASH DON’T READ IT” but with this?? I wish I could snap my fingers and every copy of it in this world would burn to ashes.
    Sorry, but I get real heated when I talk about this book. And if you end up reading it, that’s obviously completely cool, I definitely think if I hadn’t read this book and just knew the premise I’d be like “oh that might be a book Melanie would enjoy”. But I just couldn’t let you go into it without knowing all of this? SO YEAH. Sorry. I hate being THAT person but I just… I cannot with this book.

    1. This is… everything. Thank you, Lea, seriously! I am actually taking it off my TBR because of this. Like, on IG everyone is praising it EXCEPT for my good friend who is legit my book twin, so…. between you and her? It’s gone.

      1. Super glad to hear you are taking Wintersong off your TBR. I read it and… didn’t DNF it (close call though), but felt so uneasy about it. Reading what people are saying totally clicks and makes me understand why I had such a hard time with it.

        Save yourself some time and read something more worthy instead 😉

        It’s shocking to me how little people are pointing out its problematic elements. But oh well, when you’re really loving a book, it can be hard to notice these things.
        But honestly.. the things I mentioned are really just the tip of the iceberg 😒

  3. This is a great list! I haven’t read the WInter’s Song yet but I really want to. I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews about it but I still want to give it a shot. Let’s hope we both love it! I loved Melissa Marr’s Wicked Lovely! I haven’t picked up her other fae series but I hope you enjoy it! Happy reading! 🙂

      1. I think it’s important for you to know -because the author doesn’t talk about it in her notes in the first book- but the author has struggled with mental illness, and I think this important to know when reading this book.

  7. After reading the previous comments, I’m now really worried by how much I loved Wintersong. I really liked that it was own voices bipolar rep but didn’t pick up on the problematic issues of consent. I feel like I should reread it but I did so recently. I’ll try the sequel instead and see if I pick up on anything 😦

  8. oh, i was going to say that wintersong was one of my faves of last year but reading the comments, it looks like i didn’t pick up some problematic content?? i think i need to reread it before i recommend it again
