BTS Graphic Lyrics Series Review

This summer, BTS and BigHit released five graphic lyric books that tie-in with the Bangtan Universe and it was pretty much the best combining of worlds for me! All five of these books are by different artists, all who took very different approach to enhance the power of these stories, and I think I fell in love with each one for a brand new reason! But I knew that before the end of the year, I wanted to do little mini reviews of them all, and what more perfect date than the birthday of our main character, Kim Seokjin! I hope you guys enjoy!

➽ You Never Walk Alone

BTS Perform You Never Walk Alone + Spring Day @ Melon Music Awards 2017

“Baby fly fly fly fly it like it like that”

This first installment in the BTS Graphic Lyric series is the start of it all, where we get to see Jin and his current life where he is very much feeling the weight of his father’s expectations. But that weight starts to feel a little lighter when he meets six boys at school, and the seven of them have to work together to clean up a space. Soon he realizes that maybe he really doesn’t have to walk this path in life alone, while the reader gets little glimpses and hints of the different paths that are yet to come for all seven of them. And all good things must come to and end, especially the the Bangtan universe.

The art of this book is so very beautiful, and I think the color palette is perfection. The images and colors truly go together magically and fully set the stage of this heart-wrenching story. Yet, the last pages still instill so much hope in the reader.

➽ Save Me

BTS (방탄소년단) ‘Save ME’ Official MV

“Don’t wanna be lonely, just wanna be yours”

This is my personal favorite installment of all the BTS Graphic Lyric series! Instantly, from the very first page, you can tell that this story is going to take a much darker turn. While the lines of what is real and what is fake are blurring for all the members throughout, with the help of beautiful opaque papers on certain pages to really heighten the storytelling.

This installment very much focuses on Hobi and Jimin and the abandonment both of them have felt. Both are trying to be brave, make the best of the situation they are in, but they desperately want to be saved and not alone. Yet together, in the hospital, they are able to carve out their own little corner of happiness because of dance and because of each other.

TL;DR: The BigHit carousel(s) will forever haunt me.

➽ House of Cards

160723 epilogue in beijing House Of Cards BTS JIMIN 세로 focus

“Now way, now way, it’s collapsing again”

The way this installment was made for those who love to suffer from that yoonkook angst. We see Jungkook, losing his childhood quickly before his eyes, while his father leaves him and his mother. Then we get to see Yoongi, finding love and happiness in his piano because of his mother, but that all changes when he loses everyone and everything he has loved, except for a few piano keys, because of a fire.

Both of these boys are definitely descending into darkness and despair, but maybe together they will be able to find some light and hope. And this beautiful uniquely bound book, telling this tale, make the visuals feels so real and so haunting.

➽ Run

BTS (방탄소년단) ‘RUN’ Official MV

“Don’t tell me, don’t tell me, don’t tell me bye bye”

Namjoon and that train container haunt my dreams, I swear to you. This is the Graphic Lyric book that I really recommend watching the music video with, because no other BTS MV gives you as much Bangtan Universe storyline as Run. And the art in this book just adds to everything and makes the story play before you like the visual masterpiece that it is.

But we get to see Joon working impossibly long hours, while trying to take care of his family and still find happiness while achieving dreams for himself. And we also get to see Taehyung and how his father is an alcoholic who is being violent towards him and his family. Both of these young men are just looking for safety and solace, and they are willing to do anything to achieve it, but in the meantime they can find a little bit of both of those things with each other.

➽ Butterfly

BTS – Butterfly Show Music core 20160514

“Is it true? Is it true? You, you”

This last (as of now) Graphic Lyric book is a beautiful glimpse into the boys being together, being safe, and being carefree enjoying time together while Jin views it all. Yet, how the pages are also able to be turned, we can see Jin struggling with waking up and having to start all over again while Jungkook and Yoongi, Jimin and Hobi, and Tae and Namjoon are in their other alternate realities where they are struggling together.

Truly this whole story is so wild, so beautiful, and so heart-wrenching. Not only is Butterfly one of my favorite BTS songs, it just so beautifully encapsulates change, and opportunity, and how things can always get better, even if we are forced to endure not so great situations a little while longer.

I truly do not know where this story is going to end, but BTS (in this alternative reality and in our own) are soulmates and I hope they all get the happy endings that they deserve.

I truly cannot wait to see where this story goes next! I will say, that these books are kind of hard to get now, especially the box set and anything close to the original price! But Cokodive does have them singularly as of the writing of this blog post! I hope you all enjoyed, and truly there is no better combination than BTS and books for me! But I hope you’re all have the happiest of reading, the happiest of listening, and just the happiest of days and nights. I love you!

Park Jimin Book Recommendations

My BTS YouTube | My BTS Insta | My BTS Twt

Today is Jimin’s birthday here in my time zone and I couldn’t not make some sort of blog post celebrating it. I know a lot of people joke about their “emotional support kpop boy” but oh my word has Jimin made 2019 and 2020 so much brighter for me. His words, his presence, his voice has gotten me through so much, and I truly don’t even have the words to tell you all how much he means to me. He makes me so proud, and feel so seen, and so very inspired on so many levels, and I really so aspire to be as kind and loving and supportive as he is to his loved ones. But before I make a full on thesis statement about my love for him and everything he has done for me, let me just give you some book recommendations based on his solo songs. 💜

LIE

“Please bring back my smile”

Lie is Jimin’s very first solo! My interpretation of Lie is about all of the lies we tell ourselves. I personally think this is both ends of the spectrum where we lie about being happy when we aren’t, but also the lies about ourselves that encroach our thoughts when we are actually happy. For me, this song is very much about mental health, and I think Jimin is really brave to have this song, because you can see how much it impacts, and has impacted him. So were are three books about mental health that made me feel very seen, and that I think could be very healing about all those littles lies.

SERENDIPITY

“we bloom painfully beautifully

Serendipity if my favorite song probably ever, so this one is extra close to my heart. My interpretation of Serendipity is that it is all about growth, and healing, and finding happiness in so many different places. The word “serendipity” means to be happy due to chance, and what is more serendipitous than true love, for yourself and/or for others. To truly see another person completely, and to love them wholeheartedly flaws and all, and unconditionally choose them over and over. It is a very powerful thing, and a very vulnerable thing, and something that we are never quite ready for. But this song is so powerful, so vulnerable, and so… romantic with all the differently types of love we are able to have in this life! So here are three of my favorite books about love, both for ourselves and for others.

FILTER

“For you, I will be new every day”

Filter is Jimin’s most recent solo that we just got to see finally performed last weekend (I am sorry for this video quality, lol). My interpretation of Filter is a little darker, so I am sorry for that. But Jimin is obviously a very successful human and I think this song is about how he can slip into many roles to please different people, and the expectations they place on him. I also obviously think Jimin is a very genuine person, and he loves his fans more than anything and he shows that unapologetically, but I also think he is aware of the different masks (and egos) that he is able to put on for BTS and just in general from being in the most successful kpop group ever which makes his life constantly scrutinize because he is always in the public eye. So here are three books where the main character changes a lot based on the circumstances life has placed on them.

PROMISE

“I want you to be your light”

Promise is Jimin’s only and first actual solo work, the other three have been on BTS albums where the other members also have solos, so Promise is a little different and very special. Oh, and the meaning actually makes me weep! But my interpretation of Promise is that sometimes loving yourself is a lot harder than loving others. Yet, seeing how far you’ve came, and knowing how far you have to go, can be comforting, especially if you make promises along the way. Again, this is very much a song about mental health, to me, and how you are worthy of being here, and worthy of love, and worthy of kindness, both from others and yourself. So here are three books all about growth and journeys and how we all deserve happy endings.

Oh, and all of these books are my favorites of all time! Jimin really does deserve the entire world. He is just the embodiment of love and healing and growth and I always feel so honored to call him my ult bias. Thank you all for being supportive of this other love of mine, and being able to pair it with books always makes my heart so very happy! Do you like kpop? Tell me your fave groups and biases, if so! And I hope you’re having happy listening and reading! 💜

花樣年華 HYYH The Notes 1 (The Most Beautiful Moment in Life #1) by Big Hit Entertainment

Save Me – BTS Webtoon ★★★★★

“Those days were gone and would never come again.”

A little over a year ago I fell completely in love with BTS. I love their music that they pour everything into, their dedication to never give up and always strive for greatness, and their hearts that they choose to show to their fans constantly in everything they do. Stanning BTS was one of the easiest choices I’ve ever made and falling in love with each of these seven humans was nothing short of magic.

Not only are they the biggest band in the whole world (who recently got their first Billboard Hot 100 #1 spot) they also give so much content to their fans! Obviously we get all their music and videos, but we also get so much behind the scenes things, along with their own shows and filmed vacations, to them just interacting with us on twitter and on weverse, to them having their own cartoon characters, and to them having their whole alternative universe!

It is really powerful and really beautiful being able to watch all of these music videos and see these pages truly come to life. They really do also incorporate so many hints and nods at the BU in all of their things, and it’s really impressive. So many times while reading these pages, I could just perfectly visualize what was happening because of all of the mvs!

But basically this is a story about the seven BTS members in an alternative universe where they are not BTS. They all went to school together and met while cleaning for punishment, but they all became close very quickly. That is, until they were all forced to separate for very different reasons, but the timelines can get very dark. Yet, one member has the power to restart, and retry, and relive events to try to save them all, and allow them all to experience safety and friendship and happiness.

BTS -

Seokjin (석진) – Jin truly has an extra heartbreaking storyline, because not only is he dealing with his friend getting taken in the past, he also lost his mother, and is trying to live his life for (and pleasing) his father who sent him away to the US.

Namjoon (남준) – Joon has to work odd jobs (one being at the gas station) to try to pay his dad’s hospital bills. He is from a small village, and likes to pretend everything is okay when it is not. He also has a train container that he seeks solace in and keeps the light on for the boys always.

Yoongi (윤기) – A fire burned down his home, and now he is very self-destructive. He finds comfort in the piano, but is still haunted by a piano key. But music for him will always be hope.

Hoseok (호석) – his mom left him at an amusement park, so he lives in and out of places but mostly the hospital. He finds love in dance, and even though he hurts his ankle, he runs away and travels for a little bit with dancers. Yet, he really is the glue and hope of this friend group, truly.

Jimin (지민) – he has seizures and is hospitalized. Yet, you soon find out that the seizures aren’t the only reason he is being forced to live at the hospital, but because his family wants to hide him away. Jimin loves dancing, and he can’t stop thinking about Green Flower Arboretum.

Taehyung (태형) – Tae is getting abused by his father who is an alcoholic. He for sure has the darkest thoughts about his father and about himself, but we soon realize that Tae also has a power of his own, and that is too see parts of things yet to happen.

Jungkook (정국) – JK’s father abandoned him and his mom, and how he just gets into fights and gets beat up to feel something. Jungkook is so very angry, and himself and at the world, and his chapters were favorite even though I cried every time.

“You must survive […] I must survive”

All of these boys are dealing (and trying to live with) with so much anger and hurt and abandonment. We get to see them find outlets and healing through the power of dance, and music, and art, and writing. And they are constantly reminding each other that they are good people, and that they are worth more than the horrible circumstances that are placed on them. The power of friendship and the power of finding your soulmates is something I don’t even have words for. Yet, I truly believe BTS would have found each other in any universe and in all the timelines.

Overall, I love this story and I can’t wait to see where it goes. BTS just give us so much, and I’m so happy I was able to reread this before The Notes, Vol. 2 gets shipped out this fall! I was screaming every time Smeraldo was mentioned. I was grinning like an idiot every time we saw white birds, umbrellas, trains, and fireworks. Hell, I even feel for Yoonkookers while reading this. So many dots, and they all just make you think about how BTS really connect everything together. Forever so thankful I live in this world with BTS and all their serotonin-inducing content.

Trigger and Content Warnings: abandonment, abuse, blood, alcoholism, loss of a loved one, self-harm, seizures, talk of suicide, hospitalization, depression depiction, mention of throwing up, and just overall very serious and sad situations that may be hard to picture BTS in. Please use caution while reading!

Save Me – BTS Webtoon (The Most Beautiful Moment in Life 0) by BigHit Entertainment & LICO

“No matter how many times I tried, I could never save all of them on my own.”

Save Me (The Most Beautiful Moment in Life 0) is a graphic work story all about BTS’s BU (Bangtan Universe), which is an alternative universe in which BTS was never formed, even though the seven members all went to school together and were close friends. Yet, when this webtoon starts out, they are all very distanced from one another. You can read this for free HERE!

Also, I very much recommend watching the music videos for I NEED U, Run, and Epilogue: Young Forever, where you will see this story come to life before your eyes. There are so many more easter eggs and so many more music videos, but I personally feel like these are the three most important to watch before or after you read this webtoon! But please know that this is a very dark story, with very dark themes and elements! So, please make sure you are in a safe headspace! And just in case, I’m going to link my content and trigger warnings at the start of this review, so you can use caution reading this review as well!

Content and Trigger Warnings: suicide, murder, death, abuse, overdosing, forced institutionalization, depression depiction, grief depiction, trauma depiction, abandonment, and loss of a loved one.

Jin is the star of this story, because he has the ability to travel back in time and is hoping that he can make things right. Jin lost touch with everyone when he studied abroad, but now he is back and a dream where all his friends are at the bottom of the ocean is haunting him. Now, he is waking up every day on April 11th, trying to remember what he experienced, and trying to come up with how he can save himself and his six lost friends from terrible fates.

Seokjin (석진) – Wakes up, missing his old friends and wondering about their whereabouts, when he slowly finds out that terrible things have happened to them all. He might have the power to save them all, but he need the help from them all to keep them safe.

Namjoon (남준) – Works at a gas station but is being detained for assaulting a driver.

Yoongi (윤기) – Is trying to commit suicide, after the death of his mother in a fire.

Hoseok (호석) – Abandoned by his mother for some time now and is now hospitalized and diagnosed with Munchausen syndrome.

Jimin (지민) – Also living in the hospital, feeling abandoned by his family, and struggling with very serious depression and suicidal thoughts.

Taehyung (태형) – Is being jailed by the police for murdering his father, who was abusive to he and his sister.

Jungkook (정국) – Looks like he was trying to commit suicide walking into traffic.

Art is breathtaking. Truly. And I read this on my iPad and the seamless flow of the story just scrolling down felt therapeutic. Really. I truly think this tale is wonderfully crafted, and this is coming from someone that doesn’t really like “Groundhogs Day” storylines where a character is forced to start a day over again and again. But Bless April 11th, and bless Kim Seokjin, because this was one of the most captivating things I’ve read all year.

The story is truly hard to read in the best way possible. ARMY loves BTS so much, that just seeing these heartbreaking alternative timelines is hard. But BTS is always so aware of their power and their platform, I think that they are bringing awareness to so many peoples actual realities.

Also, just picturing a world without BTS? I don’t want to know her. BTS is such a bright light in this trashfire world we live in. And just thinking about the generations of kids and teens listening to BTS and their message and how much positive and happy energy they are rippling through this world for lifetimes to come. I’m weeping speechlessly. And then picturing all the kids and teens of color who are growing up and seeing these seven members take over the world with their light and positivity? Giving them the confidence to do the very same, unapologetically? Wow, the actual true blessings. BTS is a gift to this world, and I’m forever thankful I’m living in it to experience it.

And as always, BTS and their genuine love for each other always shines through. These humans just truly love each other unconditionally and they value their friendship so very much. I truly think that is what the heart of this story is about; friendship, and all the immeasurable things these seven humans are willing to do for it. And the answer? It’s anything. They will do anything for their friendship.

Overall, this story just means a lot to me. You all know how hard I have fallen down the BTS rabbit hole this summer, and there is no coming back, friends. I can’t believe all the beautiful content that BTS (and bighit) gives us, and this alternative universe story is for also a highlight, as heartbreaking and heart-wrenching as it is. I for sure recommend this to any BTS fan out there, just please use caution because of all the triggers and the dark material. I purple you, friends. Happy reading.
